The fitness industry is notorious for having a high number of self-proclaimed experts, though it’s difficult to quantify an exact number. These individuals often claim expertise based on personal experience, minimal training, or a strong social media presence, rather than formal education or certifications. This phenomenon is fuelled by the accessibility of social media platforms, where anyone can present themselves as a fitness authority.
To put it in perspective:
- Social Media Influence: Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have millions of fitness influencers. Many of these individuals build large followings by sharing workout routines, diet tips, and lifestyle advice, often without formal qualifications. While some have genuine expertise, many do not.
- Lack of Regulation: The fitness industry, in many regions, lacks strict regulations that mandate certification or formal education for personal trainers and fitness coaches. It only takes around 6-12 weeks to become a certified personal trainer. This gap allows almost anyone to declare themselves a fitness expert.
- Consumer Demand: As more people seek convenient and accessible fitness advice, the demand for online content grows. This demand attracts a variety of content creators, from highly trained professionals to those with little to no formal background. Sadly not even the rule of “you’re getting, what you’re paying for” can be applied in the industry. Many times the price reflects only the premium location and not the expertise.
While there are many knowledgeable and credible professionals in the fitness industry, it’s essential for consumers to research and verify the qualifications of those they choose to follow or hire for fitness advice.
